About the program

Improving your English language proficiency to prepare you for university study is the first step toward earning a degree abroad, and toward a bright future. If your goal is to learn English for college or university study in Canada, or if you wish to apply for conditional admission to any of the 600+ universities ELS is partnered with, our English for Academic Purposes English course may be the right language program for you.

This intensive English program includes 12 levels of English language proficiency (from Beginner to Masters) – ELS has placement tests to evaluate your abilities, so you can begin to study English abroad at the right pace.

Certificate of Completion

Successful completion of Level 112 of the EAP English program earns you a Certificate of Completion that 600+ ELS college and university partners accept as proof of the English proficiency needed for admission. Many two-year partner colleges will accept Level 109.

If you successfully complete EAP English Level 112 and wish to continue to study the Masters curriculum, you may pursue three additional modules of Masters content for additional challenge and growth, space permitting.

Curriculum

The EAP course curriculum is designed to teach you how to speak English accurately and with confidence while you gain the skills needed to easily transition to university study. With 30 50-minute lessons per week, you will learn the key fundamentals of the English language in conjunction with vital study techniques for academic success. 

  • Key Language Skills: Our English courses cover all essential language skills such as: listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, and grammar. You will learn to speak with clarity, listen carefully, and gain the writing competencies necessary to complete your academic assignments with ease and accuracy. 
  • Key University Success Skills: To succeed academically, you will need to learn important study techniques specific to the curriculum of colleges and universities in Canada. Our EAP program teaches you critical thinking, how to deliver presentations, public speaking, note-taking, academic research, and more. 
  • Skills Enhancement Classes: Exact courses offered at each location may vary, but ELS Centers offer Skills Enhancement Classes dedicated to subjects such as: current events, university preparation, advanced writing workshops, academic skills, public speaking, and more – enabling you to not only learn the English language, but to become part of the conversation.

Levels

ELS offers 12 proficiency levels (Beginner to Masters), as well as placement testing to determine the level that best fits your abilities. At the end of every four-week session, if you successfully meet your level's requirements, you will move up to the next level. As you progress through the levels, your courses build upon the skills you learned in the lower levels and become more complex.
Beginner
Levels 101/102/103
  • Communicates at a basic level in everyday situations
  • Understands English when spoken to slowly and clearly
  • Understands a few words and phrases
  • Responds to simple questions and directions
Intermediate
Levels 104/105/106
  • Communicates facts and opinions
  • Discusses and argues in a culturally acceptable way
  • Understands most questions and statements at normal speaking speed
  • Carries on conversations with native speakers
  • Uses English to shop, order food in restaurants and ask for directions
Option on Completion
  • Enroll in the IELTS™ Preparation program, TOEFL® iBT Preparation or English for Business program from Level 106 onward
Advanced
Levels 107/108/109
  • Communicates effectively in most social situations
  • Understands a wide range of idioms
  • Maintains extended conversations with native speakers
  • Uses English with growing accuracy and fluency, including reading and writing
  • Participates fully in most conversations
Option on Completion
  • Some Canadian or U.S. university and college pathway partners accept completion of Level 109 of the English for Academic Purposes program
Masters
Levels 110/111/112
  • Speaks and understands English with ease
  • Reads and writes with sufficient proficiency to satisfy professional and university requirements
  • Conducts business competently in English
Option on Completion
  • Begin an undergraduate or graduate degree program
